DENR to students: Campaign for “cleaner, clearer, safer water”

“We cannot do this alone. The advocacy for cleaner, clearer and safer water is only possible with the help of everyone,” said Director Ester A. Olavides, head of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-EMB) XI, during her lecture in the annual “Warriors of Water Students Summit” at the JPIICD Quadrangle, June 28.

With the theme “Greening the Blue, Students Save our Waters,” this year’s gathering spotlighted on encouraging college students to engage in cleaning waterways around Davao City through their school’s community extension programs.

Participating colleges included: Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), University of Immaculate Concepcion (UIC), University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP), University of Mindanao (UM), among others.

The one-day seminar was attended by the National Service Training Program (NSTP) students together with their respective coordinators from different tertiary academic institutions in the city.
Private companies like SM and Petron also extended their support by providing tools to be used during the clean-up drives and other related activities.

NSTP students of the College and other cooperating schools brought into action the “Cleaning the Esteros Program” of the DENR last July 6. Students were deployed to nearby sites where problems in the waterways are profusely observed.
